Our Mission
On any given day the Humane Society of New York is responsible for hundreds of animals with diverse needs. For many, the Society is the only place they will find help. We believe that the emotional and physical needs of the animals are equally as important as medical care. Our programs work to reduce the number of unwanted homeless pets and animal suffering while preventing future life-threatening medical conditions.
Veterinary Care
Our full-service animal hospital is open seven days a week offering high-quality and low-cost veterinary care from basic wellness to diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures.
- The Animal Emergency Appeal allows us to grant hundreds of thousands of dollars to the neediest patients for lifesaving medical care.
- The Willis Fund provides spay and neuter services at a reduced cost.
- The Animal Mukti Program provides free spay and neuter services for pit bull and pit bull mixes.
- The Outdoor Cat Spay and Neuter Program, one of the first in the NYC area, provides a spay and neuter package for feral cats.
As medical technology advances, we continually seek opportunities to expand our scope of services and diagnostics to provide comprehensive care to our patients.
Adoption Center
At the Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center, the quality of each animal’s life is paramount.
- While waiting for placement in carefully screened, permanent homes, dogs and cats enjoy daily play sessions with staff and volunteers.
- Adoption dogs are evaluated and trained under the supervision of Bill Berloni, our Director of Animal Behavior & Training. Once a dog is adopted, Bill offers a lifetime of guidance and assistance to the new owners.
- While in our care at our no-kill shelter, our adoption animals receive comprehensive medical care and have immediate access to onsite veterinary care 365 days a year and board-certified specialists as needed.
- If for any reason an adopted animal is no longer able to stay with their new family, they are always welcome to come back “home” to the Society.
We have long been noted for our pioneering and innovative approach to animal care, considering their highly individualized physical and emotional needs when taking responsibility for their care.
